MCHS faces traditionally strong Cedaredge

When asked about his football team, Cedaredge coach Carl Rice immediately replied. "We're not really that big, except for our 280 lb. defensive lineman and a 6-foot-7-inch, 245 lb. tight end."

The Moffat County High School varsity football team, 0-1, will meet the Bruins, 1-0, tonight at 7 p.m., 1-0, at Cedaredge.

"We haven't really prepared for Cedaredge specifically. This week we're just fine tuning," said Bulldogs head coach Kip Hafey. "These games are a preseason for us before league starts."

The Class 2A Bruins are returning a strong core of players from last year's 5-4 season during which they came within six inches of making the state playoffs.

"We finished strong last year after losing our first three games and we basically have the same kids back," Rice said. "We gave Eagle Valley their only loss of the regular season and we were within inches of the goal line, down by two, in the last game and were unable to score. We're a good team this year."

The ninth ranked team in 2A also boasts senior tailback Kurt Kissner who rushed for more than 1,500 yards last season.

So with Kissner and Chuck Anderson, the 245 lb. Tight end, the MCHS defense will have its hands full.

MCHS Defensive coordinator said he hadn't prepared specifically for the Bruins but worked on better pass coverage and stressed to his team the importance of playing through all four quarters during the practice sessions this week.

Coach Rice had a similar outlook on the week's practices for his team,

"It's too early to prepare for a team specifically," he said. "We're just working on the basics and making sure everyone is in the right position."

Although he hasn't scouted the Bulldog team he said his team is prepared for a tough, hard fight.

"We could have gone and scheduled some 1A school to crush," he said. "But we wanted a tough game from a 3A school and we expect to get it from Moffat County."

In other Bulldog football news the freshmen team rolled over West Grand 20-14 on Monday night.
