Allan McStay, a former client of Horizons Specialized Services in Craig, used to love sitting on park benches to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
Because of this pastime, the staff and clients at Horizons decided what better way to remember McStay, who died two years ago, than a park bench.
At a tearful dedication ceremony two weeks ago, McStay's acquaintances remembered their old friend by presenting the new bench, which sits next to the Horizons greenhouse at 50 W. 13th Street.
"Allan would have enjoyed this bench just sitting out in the sunshine," said Pauline Godfrey, an employee of Horizons who worked with McStay.
After McStay died, his parents donated money to Horizons Specialized Services.
"We were brainstorming about what we could do with the money and we came up with the idea for a bench," Godfrey said.
The bench reads "In Memory of Allan McStay," and has an emblem of a cowboy underneath the words because "Allan was a cowboy," Godfrey said.
"I know I am just one of many whose life was greatly enhanced by Allan," she said.
Dan Rice, a client of Horizons, shared a few words about his friend during the bench dedication.
"He was a good friend," he said. "He had a happy heart. Some days he was pretty ornery but I surely liked him."
