Howard and Sharron Salman moved to Craig five months ago to to fill a need residents said was a priority three years ago.
The Salman's are the owners of The Jewel Assisted Living Center, located at 634 Breeze St. The Jewel is a 10-bed living center that caters to senior citizens who are looking for a family environment in which their daily needs are met. Those needs could include help with cleaning, bathing, transportation and medications.
All meals are provided at The Jewel, and residents are encouraged to participate in community and in-house activities.
"A lot of [seniors] still have a lot of energy and a lot of spunk and don't want to sit around," Sharron said. "We just try to make it a home away from home for them."
The couple are fixing up what used to be a youth care center. They are allowed to take two boarders now and will be allowed eight more as soon as the state approves the paperwork, a step Sharron expects will be taken this week. The first resident will move in Feb. 1.
"There's definitely a need [for an assisted living center]," Sharron said. "I've had a really good response."
The Salmans have four years experience running an assisted living center in Hugo, Colo.
They sold the center and "retired" for the second time, but found the sedentary life unfulfilling. And, they were tired of living in the plains and wanted to be closer to mountains.
Sharron has more than 30 years of experience in the health care field as a certified nurse assistant and as an emergency medical technician. Howard is retired from government work.
"This is a rewarding job," Sharron said. "I don't feel like it's work. We're used to having a full house."
The Jewel accepts private pay and Medicaid residents and offers private and semi-private rooms.
As the business grows, Sharron expects to hire one to two employees as needed.
"This is totally different then being run by a government. It's more personal," Sharron said. "It's like an extended family atmosphere. We really establish relationships with clients."
The Jewel will have an open house at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 10. The community is invited to attend.
