The May 12 Help Stamp Out Hunger drive by post offices across the nation was a great success, and Craig's carriers were again impressed with the generosity of the community.
"The community supported the drive pretty well. We collected more food this year than in the past. This was the most we've ever collected," said Don Offutt, mail carrier for the Craig Post Office. "Participation seems to get a little better each year. This year we collected 2,680 pounds and delivered that directly to the Inter Faith Food Bank."
Colorado residents donated 734,000 pounds, and Wyoming residents donated 100,000 pounds, providing for over 641,000 meals to feed the hungry in the Rocky Mountain area. The food was transported to local community and area food banks, providing food for over 900 hunger and relief programs in Colorado and Wyoming.
More than 100 post offices and communities, plus thousands of carriers and volunteers, participated in the two states.
Nationally, the final amount has not been calculated, but is expected to exceed 60 million pounds.
