Patty Snidow, director of Business and Industry Training for Colorado Northwestern Community College-Craig, has a few plans for Western Colorado, and hopes related communities feel as strongly as she does about her presentation.
Snidow proposed the formation of a Western Colorado Marketing Alliance to several area entities. This Alliance would serve the communities of Western Colorado by organizing, implementing and facilitating economic development plans and projects. What this means for Craig and Moffat County is simple: New industries moving in and providing employment opportunities for residents. The Alliance would create a pro-business image of Western Colorado.
The primary purpose of the alliance is to organize a board that would generate economic diversification leads tailored for rural western Colorado, and distribute those prospective leads to participating members. Each participating community would evaluate the leads that most interest them, and then contact and negotiate with those industries.
Targeted industries would include: telecommunications, electronics, composites, agricultural processing and products, micro-machining, information technologies and services, forestry processing and products, selected manufacturers, and mining.
Snidow presented her idea to the Moffat County Board of Commissioners and that this organization would not promote tourism; its concentration would be strictly on economic development. While tourism promotion and economic development function side-by-side, and are related in their goals, the Western Colorado Marketing Alliance group would focus only on business leads, Snidow said.
In a prospectus supplied by Snidow, an explanation of the Marketing Alliance Board's responsibilities and goals was outlined. The board would work in partnership with the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, and the Colorado Economic Development Commission; create marketing programs, budget, bylaws, and organizational structure and create a coordinated response to prospects.
A seat on the board of the Alliance requires a minimum annual contribution of $2,500. To date Cortez County, Delta County, Montrose County, Montezuma County, Garfield County, Rangely and Hayden have either acquired seats or passed supportive resolutions. The Moffat County commissioners and Craig City Council have both passed resolutions supporting of the creation of Western Colorado Marketing Alliance. The two entities are expected to contribute funding to join the board, with Moffat County and Craig either sharing seat or each governing body acquiring their own.
