The Moffat County Public Safety Center is close to completion, and to celebrate that, law enforcement agencies in Moffat County want to put law-abiding residents in jail.
On July 20, Grand Futures Prevention Coalition will host "Jail House Rock," a fund-raising event that will feature a dance, refreshments and a bed and breakfast for those hardy enough to spend a night in the new jail.
The event will benefit Grand Futures, with all the proceeds going toward its programs and organization.
There are 88 beds available for the overnight stay, which will cost $25. The ticket also covers the dance, an open-house party, refreshments, a T-shirt, breakfast the next morning and a guided tour.
To attend just the dance and open house costs $15. Breakfast, which will be served from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., and guided tours, which will be from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on July 21 cost $4 for both. T-shirts are $10, and will be sold through Grand Futures and at the dance.
"There are only 88 beds, so to join the overnight stay, it's first-come, first-serve," said Lt. Dean Herndon of the Moffat County Sheriff's Department. You must be at least 18 years old to spend the night.
The sleeping arrangements will be left to those who are staying overnight. The cells will not be designated or divided by any category.
"Grand Futures got involved when we were asked by Sheriff [Buddy] Grinstead if there was any interest from us to be a part of the opening of the new jail," said Kent Nielson, director of Grand Futures. "Buddy is on our board, and he brought the idea to us as good way to raise money for our prevention programs that are geared toward the youth and community of Craig."
The events are designed to both raise money for Grand Futures and highlight the opening of the Public Safety Center.
"The money raised will go to a good cause, and it's giving people a chance to party in the jail, which is pretty much a once-in-a-lifetime thing," Nielson said.
Tickets will go on sale July 4.
