City looks at increasing water rates

The Craig City Council will take their second look at increasing the rates water and wastewater customers may pay in 2002 at tonight's City Council meeting at City Hall.
The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.
At the Nov. 27 meeting, the Council discussed Ordinance No. 907, which would increase water and wastewater rates 4 percent, serving as a starting block in the City's attempt to balance the water department's budget.
"It's been about four years since customers saw an increase, and that one was 50 percent," City Manager Jim Ferree said. "We want to avoid having to do something like that again to the people. So I think that this would be a more beneficial route to take."
Residential customers would see a 60-cent jump in monthly service rates, increasing from $14.20 to $14.80. An increase in usage would also be added with the passing of the ordinance, with a 6-cent increase for every 1,000 gallons of water used.
That cost would increase from $1.50 per 1,000 gallons of water to $1.56 per 1,000 gallons.
The average residential customer uses 10,000 gallons of water a month.
"What we are trying to do is just get back to the point where we can break even," Ferree said. "We also want to avoid any double-digit increases that we have had in the past. The last time we had an increase was 1997, so I think now is an appropriate time."
The Council will also:
