Northwest Colorado has gotten a thick blanket of snow and been subjected to cold temperatures so far this winter. For many area residents, this is becoming a dream outdoor recreation year. But, the protection agencies want to make sure locals play safe in the snow.

The Colorado State Parks and the Moffat County Sheriff's Department is offering a winter safety seminar to help adventurers hone in on their safety practices.

The outdoor survival and preparedness seminar will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Nov. 30, at the Moffat County Courthouse. The seminar will be open to the public free of charge.

Information will be presented on winter weather preparedness and survival. According to the Moffat County Sheriff's Department, the information will be valuable for anyone that enjoys outdoor activities during the winter months, including hunting, snowmobile riding, ice fishing and skiing.

"It is aimed at people who like to be outdoors during the winter," Clyde Anderson, emergency manager for the Moffat County Sheriff's Department, said. " We are going to be concentrating on environmental medical emergencies, such as hypothermia and frostbite along with safe snowmobiling and cold weather preparation."

People who attend will get informational packets on winter survival and some door prizes donated from local businesses.

The seminar will also cover what to put in a winter survival pack and what to do if a person gets lost during the winter.

"It never hurt anybody to review safety precautions," Anderson said. "This seminar will be beneficial for anyone who spends time outdoors during the winter."
