It wasn't what golfers Vanessa Wilson, a junior, and Linsdey Scott, a sophomore, wanted but it's what they will have to take.

On Monday and Tuesday, Wilson, making her second straight Class 4A state tournament appearance finished with a 97-97194 while Scott ended up with a 101-95196 at the Lake Valley Golf Course in Longmont.

Neither Wilson and Scott placed in the competition.

"Probably scorewise, they finished were we thought they would," said coach Tom Dockstader. "We were hoping for a little bit better and they were to, but realistically they finished were they thought they would."

According to Dockstader, Wilson struggled with her long game.

"Vanessa managed her game well," said Dockstader. "Her short game and putting were both pretty good. She didn't hit the ball towards the green like she usually does."

Dockstader was pleased with the way Scott bounced back on the second day by cutting five strokes.

"Lindsey really struggled the first day," said Dockstader. "She wasn't hitting the ball well and then she was in a group with a girl who finished in fifth place on the first day. Lindsey came back on the second really day well. She would have even finished better but finished with back-to-back double bogeys."

On the top of the individual standings were Nicole Birdsong of Denver South, who finished in first with scores of 72-72144, and Lynette Duran of Green Mountain, who came in second with scores of 76-73149.

"There are some really good players," said Dockstader. "The girl who won it was even par for the two days and there was a lot of scores in the 70s and 80s."

In order for Wilson and Scott to be competitive at the state tournament, Dockstader believes they need to play in competitive tournaments over the summer. "They can't just be satisfied by playing with Mom and Dad," said Dockstader. "They need to go and compete against good players as much as they can."
