Peer ready for college hoops

Senior guard Adam Peer is getting a chance to fulfill a dream.
Peer, this year's leading scorer at 13.5 points per game and an All-Conference selection at guard signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas.
McPherson College is a Division II member of the National Association of Inter collegiate Athletics (NAIA-II) and competes in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
"It has been pretty much a lifelong dream to play college basketball," said Peer. "I have always valued education a lot. I had always hoped that my ability and hard work in basketball could translate into helping my education."
Peer started playing hoops in the fifth grade.
"I got interested in playing basketball by watching old films of Pete Maverich. I was impresed with the way he played and it gave me a good impression on the game. Ever since then I have always wanted to play college basketball," he said.
"I played really hard during the summers and I went to a lot of camps. I worked on ball handling drills and shooting drills."
According to Peer, his future college has been in contact with him for a year.
"The school got hold of me through a service called Future Stars," said Peer. "They started to contact me last fall and they stayed in contact with me."
"This past year, he was on a team that was pretty balanced," said McPherson coach Roger Trimmell.
"He was a team player and he came in at the end. That is what got us really interested in him as a college player."
In the district tournament championship game, MCHS downed Rifle, 61-51, and Peer was the leading scorer with 17 points.
"I think that colleges look at what you do in big games," said Peer. "This season, I think that I had my best three games at the end. I stepped up and I think that colleges look at that."
Trimmell believes Peer, who is 6-2, will be able to use his size to his advantage.
"Adam is a good combination of a inside and outside player," said Trimmell. "In our motion offense, he will be able to post up on the guards."
Peer believes he will be able to hold his own at the college level.
"After basketball season, I made my official visit," said Peer. "It is a small campus, but it offers everything that I need.
"I went up there and played with their guys. I thought that I fit in pretty well. I felt like I could hold my own. I feel that if I work hard this summer and develop, I think that I can step in and hopefully contribute."
"In our level of play it will be difficult for a freshman to come in and play," said Trimmell. "It will not be impossible. Adam will have to learn a new offense and adjust to new coaches. We do have a junior varsity program and Adam will be playing a lot of basketball."
McPherson College is coming off a 17-13 season and a third-place conference finish.
"Their basketball program is pretty good right now," said Peer.
Peer will be equally busy in the classroom.
"Right now, I plan on tackling a pretty big class load," said Peer. "I plan a double major in business and communication and minor in political science."
