Golfer Vanessa Wilson, a junior, has been there before, but this year she isn't going alone.

Lindsey Scott, a sophomore, will be joining Wilson at the state tournament Monday and Tuesday at the Lake Valley Golf Course in Longmont.

"I am really excited to be going back," said Wilson. "I will definitely play better than I did last year."

A year ago, Wilson shot a 105 and a 110, but didn't place.

"This year, I am going to be more relaxed," said Wilson. "I will just play my game and not worry about the other girls."

Back on May 11, Wilson finished with a round of 90 for eighth place at regionals.

"We have been playing a lot since the regional tournament," said Wilson. "We have been hitting in situations and figuring out how we can get out of them."

Wilson characeterizes herself a long-ball hitter.

"I can hit my woods pretty far," said Wilson. "My weaknesses are my short game. I have been working on that this week.

"There are girls on the Eastern Slope who are very good," she added. "They have better weather and they have been playing their whole life. I just want to have a good time."

Coach Tom Dockstader feels his players are prepared for the two-day tournament.

"They are ready to play," said Dockstader. "Out of 96 players, I expect them to finish in the middle of the pack.

"There was probably more pressure on them going into regionals to get to state, especially on Vanessa with everybody expecting her to get back there," said Dockstader. "It was really nice that she could play well and get back to the state tournament."

Scott, who shot a 92 at regionals to finish in 11th place, views the tournament as a learning experience.

"I am nervous heading into the state tournament," said Scott. "I feel like I am going in at the bottom. This year, I am going to have fun and see what it is like and see what the competition is. Next year, hopefully, I will go over there and compete."

This week in practice, Scott has concentrated on her short game.

"I have worked on the short game a lot, mostly putting and the irons," she said. "As far as putting goes, I think if the greens are quick then I should do fine. At regionals, I struggled a little bit getting off the tees because I was nervous.

" Hopefully, I can get past that at state."

"It looks like there is a lot of water on the course," said Dockstader of the par 72, 6,013 yard course at Lake Valley.

"The yardage is almost exactly the same as our white tee."
