With the season half over, steer wrestler Coalin Hume, a senior, continues to hold onto the top spot.

The top four from each event qualify for the National High School Finals Rodeo in Springsfield, Ill., July 24-30.

On the first day, Hume finished in eighth, but bounced back on the second day to take home the top spot.

"On Saturday Coalin missed the inside horn of his calf," said coach Jacque Duzik. "On Sunday he regrouped to place first with a time of 6.0."

Hume has 1 point lead over senior Wade Sumpter, who competes for the Southeast All-Stars.

"Coalin's race is going to be touch and go," said Duzik. "It seems like Coalin will win one weekend and then Wade will win the other weekend. It just is coming down to the wire."

Pole rider Lacy White, a senior, was the other top finisher for the Bulldogs varisty rodeo team as she had a first place on the second day and a fourth place finish. With her two finishes, White moved into fouth place overall in the state in the standings.

"Lacy had a real good weekend," said Duzik. "She had to good days and she is doing a real good job."

Steer wrestler Justing Pankey, a senior, had a third place and a fifth place in team roping on the second day. Pankey remains in fourth in the state in steer wrestling.

"Justin is a solid fourth," said Duzik. "He is about 10 points behind. It's not very far. If he would win a couple, he would be right up there with the top two."

The team will return to action Saturday and Sunday when it takes part in Rifle.

"The season is half over," said Duzik. "We have four more weekends to go before the state finals in Greeley."
