Bullpups named district champs

There is another trophy to dust at the Craig Middle School.

The seventh-grade basketball A team walked through the district championships, easily clinching the title by beating Meeker 60-7 in the first round and winning the championship game against Steamboat 41-9.

"It was great the kids won," Head Coach Norm Yoast said. "They won it without a challenge."

Steamboat took on the Bullpups with a one-three-one zone, hoping to contain the 'Pups' fast-scoring offense.

"We attacked the zone and quickly broke it down," Yoast said. "We moved our post guy to the free-throw line, which opened the low post for an easy score."

In the second quarter, the second string team came out to play.

"They played well and helped increase the score," Yoast said.

By half time, the Bullpups had a 22-5 lead.

The 'Pups' fast-striking offense outscored the Sailors 19-4 in the second half.

The Bullpups pressured the ball on defense and forced the Sailors to make turnovers. They scored several points on Steamboat's mistakes.

The 'Pups didn't want to run the score up on the Sailors and put in the smaller team, Yoast said.

The 'Pups coasted through the fourth quarter and won the district title 41-9.

"The kids played hard all year," Yoast said. "And won it without a challenge."

According to the coach, the Bullpups set a lot of goals at the start of the season. They wanted to have an undefeated season, 13-0; increase their field goal percentage by 52 percent; shoot 60 percent from the free-throw line, which they did; and win a district championship.

They have the trophy to prove they met their last goal.

"The team should do well in high school when they get there," Yoast said.
