Depth bolsters track teams

The Bulldogs varsity girls track team used its depth to earn two second place finishes over the weekend at meets in Grand Junction and Glenwood Springs.
At the Fruita Monument Invitational Friday in Grand Junction, the girls claimed five relay titles and four individual titles to finish the meet in second place among eight teams with 136 points. Fruita Monument finished in the top spot with 175 points while Grand Junction came in third with 65 points.
Junior sprinter Heather Urbanoski finished in first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.83. Junior Jill Adamek took home the top spot in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.65. Freshman Laurel Mortensen ran to a first place in the 400-meter in 61.41.
First place relay finishes were the 4x100-meter relay team of sophomore April Tague, Adamek, junior Rhianna Bain and Urbanoski with a time of 52.30 and the 4x200-meter relay team of freshman Kate Schafer, Laurel Mortensen, Urbanoski and Adamek with a time of 1:48.79.
Other first-place relays were the 4x400-meter relay team of Laurel Mortensen, Emily Mortensen, junior Stephanie Hurd and sophomore Charlotte Steele with a time of 4:12.35 and the 800-meter medley relay team of freshman Ashley Bishop, Bain, junior Krystal Voorhees and Schafer with a time of 1:57.04.
"It was a real exciting meet," said Urbanoski. "I was glad to do so well and it was good to see our relays do so good.
"It wasn't as hard as last week, but there was still some good competition that was there."
In boys team standings, the Bulldogs finished in third place with 72 points.
Fruita Monument cruised to the title with 145 points and Cortez was second with 85 points.
"The Fruita meet is my favorite meet. At the end we were running under the lights," said boys coach Gary Tague. "We didn't enter all the guys in all the events they could have been in, but I was really pleased. They had some good times we are progressing and that is what I want to see."
Senior distance runner Kelly Christensen finished in first place with a time of 4:35.01 in the 1,600-meter run and senior Brett Duncan crossed the line in first place in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:28.91 to round out the top placers for the boys team.
On Saturday, the track teams were at the Glenwood Springs Invitational and the girls team finished five points out of first place among 20 teams with 98 points.
Hotckiss came in first place with 103 points and Glenwood Springs was second with 79 points.
Taking first place honors for the girls team were Urbanoski in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.09. Junior Emily Mortensen took home the top spot in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.95
Relays that took first place were the 4x200-meter relay team of Schafer, Laurel Mortensen, Urbanoski and Adamek with a time of 1:49.19 and the 4x400-meter relay team of Laurel Mortensen, Schafer, Hurd and Emily Mortensen with a time of 4:13.15.
In the boys team standings, MCHS finished in fourth place with 33 points and no individual top places. Glenwood Springs won the meet with 131 points and Hotckiss finished in second place with 123 points and Rifle was third with 58 points.
The Bulldogs are at the Rawlins, Wyo., Invitational today.
"We will take the younger kids and let them have some fun and compete against smaller school varsity," said Tague. "In the past we have done really well up there."
