Pitchers Mark Turner, a junior, Justin Magnuson, a senior, and Mike Knoche, a senior, combined to throw a one-hitter Saturday as the Bulldogs varsity baseball team shut down the Aspen Skiers, 11-1, in a non-league game at Craig Middle School field.
Moffat County High School (MCHS) was paced on offense by sophomore Chris Field and senior Brandon Carrera who each smacked a home run in a game stopped in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule.
Turner pitched the first three innings to earn the win, Magnuson and Knoche pitched the fourth and fifth innings.
"Mark (Turner) was making his first varsity start for us," said coach Kip Hafey. "Before the game he knew that he was going to be on a pitch count and he just did an outstanding job for us. Justin and Mike came in on relief and both did their job."
With the win, Moffat County High School (MCHS) improved to 11-4 on the season.
"The kids wanted to keep things going and they just did what they needed to do to win," said Hafey. "Aspen is a young team, but our kids came in and got the job done."
On the base baths, MCHS walked away with 10 stolen bases. Senior Justin Hollingsworth led the team with five.
"We ran really well against Aspen," said Hafey.
The Bulldogs, 4-1 in conference, play four games this week to close out the regular season.
The stretche starts at 4 p.m. today on the road for a league game against the Glenwood Springs Demons who stand at 1-4.
"Glenwood Springs is still in the hunt for the league title," said Hafey. "If they beat us both times this week and win against Steamboat Springs then they will take first. On the mound for us, Chris Field will start and then Jerod Estey will come in and finish the game."
After the Demons, the Bulldogs face the Palisade Bulldogs at 7 p.m. Tuesday on the road.
At 4 p.m. Friday, MCHS will return home and play the Demons.
At 11 a.m. Saturday, the Bulldogs will go against the Rifle Bears to finish the regular season.
