The outstanding individual finishes of two Moffat County High School golfers helped the team to its second place finish Saturday at the girl's first home tournament of the year.
Junior Vanessa Wilson shot an 86 to finish in third place and sophomore Lindsey Scott finished with a 88 to end up in sixth place at the Moffat County High School (MCHS) Invitational held at Yampa Valley Golf Course.
On the front nine, Wilson braved the wind and the rain to shoot a 45. Better weather on the back nine made for a better score when Wilson came back with a 41.
"Everything seemed to fall together for me today and everything was working," said Wilson. "It was a lot of fun."
Scott shot a 44 on the front nine and a 44 on the back nine, but struggled in the middle.
"I felt that my first nine went really well," said Scott. "I struggled a little bit to start off with in the second nine, but I came around and got my game together."
The Bulldogs golfers finished with a combined score of 263. The Rifle Bears captured first place with a score of 255 and Grand Junction came in third with a 274.
"It's great to finish in second place as a team," said Wilson. "I am so excited and it was a great tournament."
Other MCHS golfers that competed in the tournament were junior Melanie Peters who finished with an 89, senior Sarah Haslem who had a round of 103 and sophomore Laura Duran who finished with a 108.
"I am pleased with the way Vanessa, Lindsey and Melanie played," said coach Chuck Cobb. "It was a big boost for them and they needed that."
Jenny Sawyer of Rifle claimed first place honors with a score of 80. Sawyer's teammate Chystal Munsel finished in second place with an 84.
The Bulldogs had at total of three teams competing in the tournament other than the varsity team. The silver team was paced by Kristen Reid and Rachel Halcomp who both finished with a 113. Morgan Cobb came in with a 115 and Abby Dellit finished with a 124.
The MCHS white team was led by Ashley Fleetwood who shot a 112 and Amber Sanchez who finished with a 121. Maggie Rugh came in with a 135 and Shala Halcomp ended up with a 147.
"All the girls got to play today," said Cobb. "It was a good experience for all of them. A couple of the junior varsity players played really well for us."
The Bulldogs will return to the links on Friday and Saturday at the Grand Valley Invitational.
