First baseman Grady Wilson, a Moffat County High School senior, sent three balls over the fence Friday to break the Bulldogs home run and RBIs record while helping Moffat County High School (MCHS) win one of two games in a doubleheader against the Delta Panthers.

"I am just trying to help my team and the ball is going out," Wilson said.

Wilson, who is up to 12 home runs and 28 RBIs for the season, broke the 1996 home run record set by Junior Herdon who is playing in the minor leagues for the San Diego Padres. Wilson surpassed the RBI record that was held by Jarod Kunkel who set the mark a year ago when he sent 27 runners home in one season.

"I was just trying to put the ball in play," Wilson said. "I saw some good pitches and I just hit them. It feels pretty good to break the record."

"Grady just had a awesome day for us with his three home runs," said coach Kip Hafey.

Two players hit home runs In the first game, but that wasn't enough to secure the win for the Bulldogs. The Panthers ran past them, 13-6, but Moffat County had its revenge in the second game, downing Delta, 11-2.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 9-4 on the season and 3-1 in league play.

According Hafey, the Bulldogs just didn't come ready to play in the first game against the Panthers.

"In the first game we came out real sluggish," he said. "Delta came out great and they hit the ball really hard."

Junior catcher Rob Satterwhite and senior shortstop Brandon Carrera each hit a home run in the first game.

"We came out real flat in the first game," said Wilson. "In the second game, everybody was kind of [angry] and we played hard. Nobody can beat us when we play hard. We just need to do that everygame."

In the nightcap, Wilson had home runs in the second inning, third inning and the sixth inning to lead the way at the plate for the Bulldogs. Satterwhite and freshman Jerod Estey each added one home run.

"The kids got it together in the second game," said Hafey. "They really want to win this league and they knew what they had to do to win the second game."

On the mound, Bulldog's pitcher Jerod Estey went the distance increase his wins and finished the game with a 5-0 record for the year.

"My arm is just feeling good this year," he said. "In the first game, Delta was just hitting the ball well. I just tried to come in put the ball low and mix up my pitches and it came out good. My swing was feeling good and I knew that I was due sometime."

On the road Saturday, MCHS played one inning against the Glenwood Springs Demons before the game was called because of rain. The game will be made up on April 24 at 4 p.m.

The Bulldogs will return to league play at 4 p.m. Tuesday on the road against the Steamboat Springs Sailors.
