After a six-month layoff, the Bulldogs varsity rodeo team is back in action.

Moffat County High School (MCHS) started the spring season in Cortez, Colo., April 1-2 and senior Coalin Hume paved the way with a first place average in steer wrestling.

Senior Lacy White finished in second place in pole bending, fifth in barrels and seventh in goats.

Junior Kayla Steel finished in sixth place in barrels and sophomore Justin Gates took fifth place in the bulls on the first day.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Bulldogs were in Loveland, Colo. For the second week, Hume finished in first place in the average in steer wrestling.

Hume is sitting third in the state in steer wrestling.

The top four from each event qualify for the National High School Finals Rodeo in Springfield, Ill., July 24-30.

"Coalin had an excellent weekend," said coach Jacque Duzik. "On Saturday he placed first with a 4.4 (time) and Sunday he placed first with a 4.9."

White came in fifth place in pole bending, fifth place in breakaway roping and Steele had an eighth place finish in barrels.

White is in fifth place in the poles in the state standings.

"Lacy (White) looked really good in the breakaway roping," said Duzik. "She is coming on and I was happy how she did there."

Other members of the MCHS rodeo team are senior Justin Pankey, junior Sam Vasquez, junior Jennifer Anthony, sophomore Shelea Pinnt, freshman Kristen Webber and freshman Amanda Lyster.

"We also had six others that were entered," said Duzik. "They are making progress.

"Hopefully, we will get points this weekend. Everyone is working hard."

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday and Sunday in Fort, Collins, Colo.

"This will be another big rodeo for us," said Duzik. "There will be over 250 competitors that will be there."
