Sophomore Jeff Olree earned first place in the 500-meter freestyle and second place in the 200-meter individual medley to lead the way for the Bulldogs varsity swim team Saturday in Cortez in a triangular meet.
Olree finished with a time of 6:36.16 in the 500-meter freestyle and was clocked at 2:50.40 in the 200-meter individual medley.
Olree, from Rangely High school, competes with the Bulldogs because his school doesn't field a swim team.
"Jeff did a nice job at the meet," said coach Jim Vorhies. "He had a couple of really good swims."
The 200-meter freestyle relay team of junior Danny Arnold, junior Josh Shipley, senior Steven Veizaga and sophomore Parker Moore came in first place with a time of 1:56.67.
"At this stage of the year the 200-meter freestyle relay team is undefeated," said Vorhies. "Half of the kids on the team was sick and the temperature of the pool was a little on the cold side. Our times were not as quick as they usually are."
Moore came in second place in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 29.33 and third in the 100-meter backstroke at 1:23.88.
"We did all right at the meet," said Moore. "We didn't really drop any times. Our relay teams are doing really good. We should have state in the next couple of weeks in the 200-meter medley relay team."
Arnold came in third in the 100-meter butterfly at 1:16.09 and in the 200-meter freestyle at 2:37.72.
Shipley posted a third place finish in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:07.04 and a fourth place finish in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:23.88.
The 200-meter medley relay team of Arnold, Veizaga, Shipley and Moore finished in third place with a time of 2:21.55.
"Two of the members on the medley relay team were sick and if they were healthy I think that they could have pulled that one out, too," said Vorhies.
A combined Grand Junction team took the top team spot with 147 points.
The Bulldogs came in second place with 100 points and Cortez came in third place with 47 points.
"Grand Junction has swimmers from three different high schools," said Vorhies. "Those schools are Grand Junction High School, Fruita Monument and Palisade."
The Bulldogs will be at home for the first time this season at 11 a.m. Saturday when they host the Glenwood Springs Demons in a dual meet.
"On Saturday I am looking for them to swim some good times," said Vorhies. "I would like to see a lot of support from the community."
