The Moffat County High School girls swimming team competed Friday and Saturday in the Jeffco Invitational, placing 12th out of 22 teams. MCHS sophomore Eryn Leonard, above, and Steamboat Springs junior Amy Brodie qualified for the state meet individually as well as part of the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays with MCHS senior Mary Penner and Steamboat junior Luci Franklin.

With her team qualifying for four more state events, Moffat County High School girls swimming coach Meghan Francone said she was thrilled with the Bulldogs performance over the weekend at the Jeffco Invitational.

"The girls put in some really great events and we had some really good learning moments," she said. "It is always exciting to see competition we wouldn't otherwise see."

The invite, which took place Friday and Saturday at Chatfield Senior High School, included 22 teams from around the state.

The Bulldogs earned 12th place overall, led by MCHS sophomore Eryn Leonard and Steamboat Springs junior Amy Brodie.

Leonard was able to add another qualifying time to her growing list by swimming the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.13.

Her time beat the 4A girls state qualifying time of 2:08.

At the team's home meet Jan. 7, Leonard qualified in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter butterfly.

"This was the first time I had swam the (200-yard freestyle) all year, so I think I did alright taking that into consideration," Leonard said. "There was some great competition, so it was easy to push myself harder."

Brodie, who commutes to MCHS to swim on the team, swam the 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.6 seconds, beating the 4A state qualifying time of 1:06.8 seconds.

Earlier in the season, Brodie also qualified for the 100-yard butterfly.

Leonard and Brodie were also part of the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays, which both qualified for state.

MCHS senior Mary Penner and Steamboat Springs junior Luci Franklin round out the relay teams.

"I think the fact that we qualified is great with all the competition that was at the meet," Leonard said. "We did as good as we could."

After qualifying, Leonard said the two relay teams could keep pushing.

"We have been working on starts and turns, so it paid off," she said. "We will keep working on getting faster and improving our position in the rankings."

Francone said she would like to see the team's third relay, the 200-yard medley relay, also qualify.

"I think the teams' goal now is to get our last relay qualified," she said. "The more events we have, the more choices we have, so I think we will work on that for the next couple of weeks."

Bulldogs sophomore Larissa Grammar, who qualified for state in a previous meet, finished ninth in diving, scoring 287.6 points.

Grammar was pleased with her performance while competing against a different group of girls.

"On the Eastern Slope, they are at a different competitive level," she said. "Those are girls I don't usually see."

With most of the girls getting to compete at the event, Francone said it was an excellent time for the team to push themselves.

"A lot of girls learned not to give up facing stiff competition," she said. "Many times are really close, so it comes down to who wants it more and they made that decision during their races."

The MCHS girls swimming team will next compete at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Grand Junction.
