MCHS spikers ready for big weekend

It will be a busy week for the Moffat County High School varsity volleyball team, and one that could make or break the season.

The week starts on Thursday as the Bulldogs take their 6-7 overall record and 3-2 league record in for a non-conference matchup with the Meeker Cowboys. The varsity team is set to play at 6 p.m. The freshmen will start the day at 4 p.m. and then the junior varsity team will take the court at 5 p.m.

The Bulldogs haven't been in action since Thursday when they downed the Rifle Bears in three games and Bulldogs coach Vicki Haddan believes the break came at the right time.

"It was nice to have a break this weekend so the kids could go out and enjoy homecoming," said Haddan. "I also think that having a non-conference game on Thursday will help us get ready for our league games."

Varsity setter Emily Mortensen, a junior, said her team is starting to click on both sides of the ball.

"I feel that our offense is playing a lot better, because we are playing better on defense," said Mortensen. "It makes it easier for me to set the ball. I think that the rest did come at a right time. We ended last week with a good match against Rifle and I think the rest helped."

On Friday, the Bulldogs will return home and face the Delta Panthers. The varsity team will play at 6:30 p.m.

The freshmen will tangle with its counterpart at 4:30 p.m. and the junior varsity team will begin play at 5:30 p.m.

"I think that it will be great to play Delta here," said Haddan. "If we beat Delta in two then that will give us more confidence for our away games."

Saturday, the varsity team will finish the week in Rifle and the start time is set for 1 p.m. The freshmen will hit the court at 11 a.m. followed by the junior varsity team at noon.

"This is a big weekend for us, because we have two league games," said Haddan. "The league is really up in there, because Rifle went down and beat Steamboat Springs. The league is really wide open and so it's important that we win both of our games. We would be right up there at the top.

"Rifle will be tough and they are not going to want to lose at home. It should be a great match."
