the newspapers in Craig and Steamboat Springs have made changes in the management of the Craig Daily Press, Steamboat Today and the Steamboat Pilot.
Suzanne Schlicht, regional manager of WorldWest Limited Liability Co., announced that Gary E. Maitland has been promoted to replace Mitch D. Bettis as publisher of the Craig Daily Press. Maitland was the editor of both Steamboat Today and the Steamboat Pilot. WorldWest publishes all three newspapers, as well as the Hayden Valley Press.
Bettis is leaving the company to become publisher of the Aspen Times Daily and Aspen Times Weekly, and general manager of the Glenwood Springs Independent.
"In the two and a half years Gary Maitland has been with our newspapers, he has effected major improvements in our news products," Schlicht said. "I'm thrilled Gary has an interest in advancing his career with us, and advancing our newspaper in Craig."
Schlicht, also publisher in Steamboat, said she is actively searching for Maitland's replacement.
Maitland came to Steamboat Springs in May 1997 from Winter Haven, Fla., where he was executive editor of The News Chief.
During his tenure in Steamboat Springs, Maitland successfully guided the newspapers through a period of growth. The Saturday edition of Steamboat Today was added to the publication schedule, and production of the Hayden Valley Press was absorbed into the Steamboat office. In his new role, Maitland said he is eager to learn the advertising side of the newspaper business.
"I'm ready to go; I'm excited," Maitland said. "My long-term goal has always been to become a publisher. If you talk to my mother, she'll tell you that on the day I went into the business, I said that someday I'd become a publisher. I joined WorldWest because I felt the company provided me with a better chance to realize that goal."
Maitland has been a newspaper editor for 25 years, working at newspapers in Tennessee and Mississippi before taking the job in Winter Haven. He has a degree in business administration from Union University in Jackson, Tenn., and has always been intrigued with the business side of the newspaper industry.
Maitland credited the staff in Steamboat Springs for the strides the newspapers made during his tenure.
"I would be most proud of the fact that the staff has managed to accomplish all of the goals that I have set forth as my own goals," Maitland said. "Everything that's been asked of us, we've done. It's a credit to them."
Bettis joined the Craig Daily Press in October 1997. Upon leaving Craig, he said he takes satisfaction from enhancing the credibility of the Craig Daily Press in the community, and from building a staff that loves working there.
"Mitch brought about many improvements at the newspaper, and I believe Gary is the best individual to take the Craig Daily Press to the next level," Schlicht said.
Maitland and his family live in Hayden and look forward to relocating to Craig.
