Bullpups had successful weekend

The Craig Middle School boys basketball teams finished with a 3-1 record Saturday on the road against the Meeker Cowboys.

The Bullpups eighth-graders ran past the Cowboys, 36-28, while the seventh-grade A team downed Meeker, 31-25, and the B team dropped a 36-24 decision.

"Meeker really improved from last year. We kind of had an easy way with them and we took them lightly at first," said eighth-grade coach Norm Yoast. "Meeker came out and jumped ahead, 8-2. The starters got going and we ended the quarter ahead, 17-8. We put a second group in and they maintained the lead."

The Bullpups had a really strong third quarter and that was the difference in the match.

"Meeker out-rebounded us for the game," said Yoast. "In the third quarter we came out and had a really good quarter. My second group then played the last quarter and it was really good for them because they got to play some kids that were equal to them."

The eighth-graders were led by Anthony Loughran and Aaron Sanchez who finished with 11 points each.

Seventh-grade coach Ann Stehlin said the A team made some adjustments at halftime and it worked.

"At halftime in the A game it was tied at 15-15," said Stehlin. "I decided to go to a zone and Meeker had a hard time making outside shots. We did a better job rebounding the ball and we kept them out of the paint."

For the seventh-grade A team Jared Lowther and Daniel Tague paced the squad with eight points each. For the B team, Lowther poured in 11 points. Kyle Rader and Tyler Pike each finished with four points.

"In the B game when we were down, 14-12, at halftime I felt like we had a chance," said Stehlin. "We just had a hard time with their offense and we need to do a lot of work on our defense. Meeker scored 14 points and we only scored six points. Meeker had some big kids and they just had a hard time handling the ball."

The Bullpups will next be in action on Friday when they face Steamboat Springs on the road and then Saturday they will host Rangley at home.
