The recent snows have the Craig Parks and Recreation Department gearing up for the annual Trailbuster program, which includes ski lessons in Steamboat Springs by the Perfect Turn Ski School.

The program is for children 6 to 15 years old. It starts Jan. 8 and runs each Saturday until Feb. 5.

There is a registration fee and the deadline to sign up is Jan. 4.

"We take them to the Steamboat Springs ski area at 7 a.m. each Saturday by a bus," said Parks and Recreation administration technician Penni Bricker. "They can rent equipment and then we drop them off at the ski schools and the instructors take them from there."

The lessons run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

"When they are done at 2:30 p.m. they have a hour of free skiing," she said. "Then the bus leaves. We are usually home by 5 p.m. It's a really fun program for the kids to learn how to ski.

"If you do a lesson per week, then that will really help you out."

The department is offering a second session from Feb. 19 to March. 18.

"The kids love the program," said Bricker. "It varies from year to year how many kids we have. Last year, we had 12 kids for each session. In the past we have up to 30 kids a session."

According to Bricker, the more children who sign up the more festive the lessons are.

"The more kids the merrier," she said. "It's a really good experience for everyone, and snowboarders can do it to."
