In what may have been a preview of things to come, the Moffat County High School varsity wrestling team used its depth to claim the team title at the Warrior Classic Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo.
The Bulldogs finished ahead of the 32-team field with 185 points.
"There is no doubt that the kids wrestled really well," said Bulldogs coach Roman Gutierrez. "They just put it together for one weekend and hopefully this will give them some confidence the rest of the season."
A week earlier, the Bulldogs finished in third place at the Rock Springs, Wyo., tournament.
"Last weekend I think they got a rude awakening," said Gutierrez. "They thought that they better step it up a notch and they did in the practice room.
"Everything came together especially for the young kids. We had five sophomores who placed."
West Jordan, Utah, was a distant second with 157.5 points and Middle Park was third with 155 points.
Peublo South was fourth with 146 points and Alamosa finished in fifth place with 141 points. Individually for the Bulldogs, senior Kurtis Kostur (5-0) earned the lone individual title at 140 pounds
"Kurtis (Kostur) wrestled just outstanding," said Gutierrez. "I felt that he was the outstanding wrestler in the tournament.
"He pinned four out of five opponents and he just totally dominated everybody.
"I was just really impressed with him and he is just focused on the year."
Taking second place for the Bulldogs were sophomore Kyle Kostur (4-1) at 119 pounds and senior Jeremiah Noland (4-1) at 145 pounds.
"I thought Jeremiah (Noland) and Kyle (Kostur) wrestled really well getting into the finals," said Gutierrez. "They both had tough matches and they just came up a little short."
Finishing in third place were sophomore Mark Hastings (6-1) at 112 pounds and sophomore Ryan Linsacum (6-1) at130 pounds. Sophomore Cody Fredrickson (3-2) earned fifth place honors at 135 pounds and sophomore Travis Linsacum (5-2) finished in fifth place at 125 pounds.
"I was just impressed with all those young kids," said Gutierrez. "They wrestled well and matches they lost were close ones."
Others who competed were senior Chris Herod (1-2) at 152 pounds; senior Coalin Hume (2-2) at 160 pounds.
Senior Kevin Field (1-2) at 171 pounds; senior Curtis McCoy (2-2) at 189 pounds; freshman Cliff Stehle (0-2) at 215 pounds and junior Mike Wooten (0-2) at heavyweight.
