The Moffat County High School girls varsity team wants to close out the first half of the season on a positive note with two games in three days.

The weekend starts at 7 p.m. Thursday when the Bulldogs, 3-2, face the Rangely Panthers in Craig.

The freshmen begin the day at 4 p.m. followed by the junior varsity team at 5:30 p.m.

The weekend closes beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday on the road when MCHS faces the Basalt Longhorns.

The freshmen start the day at noon and the junior varsity follows at 1:30 p.m.

"We need to try to get better each game out," said Bulldogs varsity coach Craig Mortensen. "I don't think that Basalt has been beaten this year and they have been playing really well this year.

"I think the game against Basalt will be one of our tougher tests this year."

The Bulldogs, who play in Class 4A, won't take the Class 3A Longhors lightly.

"Basalt is a class down and they have all their kids back from last year," said Mortensen. "Basalt will be a good ball team. Rangely beat Basalt a year ago to make it to the state tournament."

According to Mortensen, last year the Rangely Panthers were a solid team, but this year the team has inexperienced players.

"Last year Rangely finished third in the state in Class 3A," said Mortensen. "Rangely has lost a lot of players, but they will be a good team for us to play."

On Saturday, the Bulldogs held the Roaring Fork Rams to four points in the fourth quarter while scoring 11 points to break open a close game.

MCHS went on to pick up a 44-25 victory.

The Bulldogs had a balanced scoring attack as junior Emily Mortensen led the way with nine points, Heather Urbanoski, a junior, and sophomore Amber Sanchez both finished with eight points.

"We have been really happy and pleased with the way we have been playing defense," said Mortensen. "We have been doing well on offense as well. We have been missing a lot of easy shots. If we start hitting those easy shots we will be all right."
