Don Philip Berryessa, 40, was arrested Thursday at City Market pharmacy in Craig after the pharmacist reported he suspected Berryessa had falsified his prescription. Berryessa was arrested for fraud and deceit, a Class 5 felony under the state controlled substances statute.

Berryessa allegedly changed the refill amount of his prescription for the drug Vicodin. Vicodin is a short-term treatment to relieve moderate to severe pain and is effective as a cough suppressant. Vicodin can be habit-forming. If taken over a long period of time, a person can become mentally and physically dependent on it and may find the drug no longer works at the prescribed dosage. Too much Vicodin will slow breathing.

If convicted, Berryessa faces a sentence of one year to six years in jail and $1,000 to $100,000 in fines.
