Craig At least 7,786 leftover big game limited licenses remained Friday morning after last week's rush of hunters looking to buy the remaining licenses.
More than 6,000 leftover limited licenses were sold last week representeing a decrease from previous years. License sales in 1998 totaled 7,152 and 8,135 in 1997.
One contributing factor to the decrease in sales is that no leftover buck deer licenses are being sold this year, said Henrietta Turner, the division's license services manager.
Yet, of licenses sold, Denver's northeast regional office sold approximately 1,597 compared with its sales of 1,006 last year.
"You'll notice a dramatic increase over last year in the leftover license sales in the Denver office," Turner said. "The either-six elk licenses, which are not available anymore, made more people show up in the Northeast Region to buy the leftover licenses whereas before, they were available throughout the state. Leftover elk licenses became a little more desirable."
As of Friday morning, there were 1,652 limited deer licenses and 5,969 limited elk licenses remaining. Of those, no buck deer licenses remained and only 19 bull elk licenses remained.
However, either-sex licenses in both categories were still available. Bear licenses almost sold out, with 27 remaining. There are also still 20 antelope and 118 turkey licenses.
The licenses remaining will be available until they sell out or those particular hunting seasons end.
Hunters buying a license for someone else must have the hunter's conservation certificate number, proof of residency, drivers license information and proof of hunter education (if born after 1948). In addition, the buyer must sign an affidavit saying the information provided is accurate.
Hunters can also purchase a leftover limited license through the mail. Forms are available at division offices.
