Compared to last year, there are a number of changes for the upcoming 10th annual The Memorial Hospital Foundation golf tournament, coordinator Eva Peroulis said.

For one, the forecast for this year’s tournament calls for sunshine rather than rain. And there are already enough teams.

“We are totally booked,” Peroulis said. “This tournament brings in a lot of people, and I think it’s one of the biggest at the golf course.”

The tournament is scheduled to begin at noon today at Yampa Valley Golf Course, 2179 Colorado Highway 394.

Last year, 34 teams and 136 golfers played in the tournament, and the Foundation raised more than $10,000 in donations.

The money was used to help pay for the construction of the new hospital, which opened in November 2009.

Because so many golfers slowed down the tournament, a cutoff was set at 30 teams this year, Peroulis said.

“We also moved the starting time to noon,” she said. “That way, we’ll be done at 5 p.m., so people can stick around and enjoy the live music at the Tin Cup Grill.”

Although there won’t be as many teams this year, Peroulis said she expects the tournament to raise more than $7,000 to go toward new equipment for the hospital.

The tournament is a four-man scramble format.

Teams may buy mulligans, and the mulligan tickets will be used in a drawing for prizes.

There also will be a chipping pond, where golfers try to chip their ball into a swimming pool for a chance to reach into a box of cash.

Prizes include four tickets to the Aug. 28 Colorado Rockies game vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers, restaurant gift certificates and prizes from local businesses.

In addition to being hosted in the middle of the golf season and going toward what she called a good cause, Peroulis said the tournament is a popular draw for another reason.

“Well, we give out cash prizes,” she said. “The first-place teams for net and gross will get $75 (Craig Chamber of Commerce) Spree Bucks per person.”

Second-place teams in gross and net scores will receive $50 in Spree Bucks for each player, and third-place teams will receive $25 per player.
