Depending on your political proclivity the 2008 election is either a dream or a nightmare for you. Mark my word, If Bob Barr gets the Libertarian nod, he'll take votes from McCain and unless the Dem nominee implodes, there will be a Democrat living at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave come 12:00pm 1/20/09.

No offense taxslave, but the Ron Pauls and Bob Barrs of the world are nothing more than burrs in the arse of John McCain. They have next to zero chance of being elected and their candidacies do nothing but take votes from McCain. The Republican Party is trying to put up a unified front and when it comes down to convention time I'm reasonably sure that Romney's and Huckabee's delegates will cast their votes for McCain, pushing him over the top and eliminating the pipe dream that Ron Paul supporters have of him throwing a wrench into the nomination process.

Unfortunately, you are right harkner. I don't like McCain, but feel I have no choice because the end goal is to keep the Democrats out. A vote for anyone else will only serve to make a statement and help the Democrat win. If a Democrat wins, this recession will spiral out of control, the war will become an even bigger mess…and on down the line. The Democrats made that mistake in 2000 when they gave their votes to Nader. This is not a good time to make a statement. Again, unfortunate. I am hoping McCain will at least pick a decent running mate. We are in a huge mess, but it will be much worse with a Democratic controlled government.

But the other choice (obama or hillary) is worse. It would be foolish to vote “off party” simply because it takes votes away, but cannot take enough to win. A vote for anyone other than McCain is a vote for the Democrats. Sad, but true.

everytime you just choose the lesser of two evils we just slide further down the slope. I had hoped that after Bush got into office we would finally have some backbone in office again. He won't even defend himself. I don't think we need another “nice guy” I think we need a fire eater who will slide down to the other sides level and put them in their place when they need it and call them out on their lies. like I said maybe in four years a leader will emerge. I don't see one now.

Unfortunately, I see no other choice than to pick the lesser of two evils this time around. To make a “statement” by voting off party lines or not voting at all is a vote for the other side. Hopefully whoever wins will not do too much damage in the next 4 years. Typically, it takes about 4 years to make change (good or bad) and just maybe in four years we will get a decent candidate…who of course will be walking into a huge mess that will take 4 more years to straighten out….or not get a decent candidate, in which case…we continue to go to hell in a handbasket.
We are in a huge mess. Everyone I know and even don't know is complaining about the candidate selection, yet they are who “the people” have chosen. I don't get it. A handful of grassroots efforts have popped up, but not enough people have backed them to make a difference. As long as “we the people” allow “big government” to keep control, we will continue to stay the current course.
I know one thing for sure, I do not want Hillary or Obama. They will kill our economy. We are already struggling. Either one will up social service programs…which will in turn, up taxes. As much as I would love health care, neither of their solutions will be good for our pocketbooks. People are barely getting by with rising costs all the way across the board. Who can afford more of a chunk coming out of their paycheck? In addition, I don't think either of them carry the experience we need in our time of terrorism and war. So, yes, I will hold my nose and vote for the lesser of two evils and try not to vomit on my ballot.

Ron Paul is going to the convention. We'll see what happens there. He received 15% of Oregon yesterday and 8% of Kentucky.
I expect our dollar to crash before the election so it doesn't really matter. At least with Ron Paul we'll have a Constitution to look to for answers instead of a dictator who inacts Marshall Law..EO51.

If he runs as an Independent, there will not be enough “off party” voters to get him elected…so a vote for him would be a vote for Hillary or Obama, the most evil of the two evils. I am not disagreeing with you about the parties, our government…nothing. What I am saying is I feel like my hands are tied and I really have no choice other than to try to keep Hillary or Obama out. If you think it's bad now, believe me, it can get much worse…and I am sorry to say no one else will be in the running…it is either McCain or Hillary/Obama. I have to think of my vote as a vote against Hillary/Obama. I just don't see any way around that. I am all about “making a statement”, but this is not the time to do that.

wow taxslave it would be best if they left us the hell alone and let us run our own lives. the price of oil? talk to the fed cheif dropping the interest rate time and time agian to keep the stock market from dropping. that killed the dollar overseas which in turn means it can't pay for as much. the stock market needed to slow down. houseing market problems? brought on by two sets of idiots one who went out looking for idiots to sign the other signing things they shouldn't have. Now here comes big government to wipe the noses (or the other end depending on your prospective) and in the end those of us who were not idiots will pay for that with taxes.
McCain is a democrate he will sign anything that comes across his desk when a democrate congress is in charge. he has said he learned his lesson about amnesty for illegals that the people have spoken. yet he brought it back up last week again.
Please let me make one point: if you have a 401K or are in a mutual fund chances are you are in BIG OIL. when they come after them watch what it does to the value of you stack and your dividends.

He probably didn't really win in 2000 - remember the hanging chads in the state where his bro is govenor? Please, please vote for Ron Paul - we need to get this clown and his party out of office before the country goes down the tubes. Did you see the news this morning? To fund the war (that we “won” a long time ago - supposedly) he's proposing taking money from lots of needed things, including rural schools - that's us folks - directly affecting the education of Craig's kids! Now, unfortunately, any vote for Paul will be a vote for Hillary/Obama. Either will screw us further in the economy and the war. It's too late to wake up, the coffee is already gone.

FACT - if Ross Perot hadn't run then George Bush senior would have beat Clinton because H.Ross got 15% of the vote and 95% of those that voted for Perot were Republicans who would normally have voted for their party had Perot not been running. Great they made a statement and that statement was - “We want Clinton.” FACT — If Nader hadn't run for president in 2000 Gore would have won. Nader took 5% of the total vote, 95% of which would normally have voted for Gore. Nader's presence resulted in GWB winning in 2000. A vote for Nader was a vote for Bush. Third party politics result in the person most likely to win and/or most closely aligned with the third party beliefs to LOOSE!!!!! Don't be stupid – Don't Vote for the guy with two first names.

While I agree with you on many points and applaud your rally for a better government…if you vote for Ron Paul, you are simply cutting off your nose to spite your face. He can't win and anyone who votes for him in the general election may as well vote for Hillary/Obama. I myself have said all along there was no way McCain would get my vote…now here we are and I know if I do not vote for him, I am only making it easier for Hillary/Obama to take it. I think either one of them would be much worse for our country. Given McCain's age and health, I find myself wondering if he will even make it through such a stressful job for 4 years…and with that being said, I am hoping he is smart enough to pick a decent running mate.
It is impossible for Ron Paul to win. He did not even come close to winning the nomination. This election is not a good time to waste your vote to make a statement. You need to look at the big picture. You will only help elect Hillary/Obama…is that what you really want? What does Ron Paul think about all this? Given the fact that he cannot possibly win, would he rather have Hillary/Obama or McCain?

The more we speak positively about another candidate the better. If all we hear is “no way” than what do you expect, they've already won.
The democrates can rally behind Micky Mouse this year and they'll still win. The republicans have been in charge for almost a decade. With a republican president and a republican congress we still got nothing but a lousy war and loss of liberty.

Actually, no I don't listen to any of “them”. I am simply facing reality. Look at the numbers. Ron Paul did not even come close to winning the nomination. As I said earlier, everyone I know and even don't know is complaining about our selection of candidates, yet “we” (not me personally) are the ones that picked them. Our country is clearly divided three ways. The Liberals, the Conservatives and the Grassroots. The Grassroots are former Republicans and want changes, changes that I myself would like to see. However, if the Conservatives and Grassroots do not join efforts, the Liberals will win. Remember, united we stand, divided we fall. Believe me, if there were ANY way to not give my vote to McCain, I would. But sadly, at this point, there is no other choice…other than Hillary/Obama. I have to do everything I can to keep them out, so if that means vote for McCain, then my vote will be for McCain. Hillary/Obama will totally destroy us. I cannot let my anger and disgust for McCain elect Hillary/Obama. It is essential to keep a Republican President at this point in time.
My words for Ron Paul are not negative. But sadly, at this point he is no longer a candidate. I don't know how you could possibly think that he can win this election. And again, this is not the right time to “make a statement” with your vote. Your “statement” will be no more than a news story for a day…then we will have 4 years of living hell with Hillary/Obama. McCain has never for a second been my candidate of choice, but I feel it is more important to keep Hillary/Obama out, so once again I say my vote will not be FOR McCain, but rather against Hillary/Obama. He will not be a good President and doubtful he will serve more than one term…but he will be far better than Hillary/Obama. If you think it's bad now…I shudder to even think what it will be if either of them is elected. For this election, Republicans need to vote along party lines, whether they can stand the stench or not. Look at the numbers. It will already be a close race and every vote for anyone other than McCain will be a vote for Hillary/Obama. I cannot be a part of that. No matter what it takes, we have to keep Hillary/Obama out. Dividing the Republican party will not accomplish that. Maybe in four years, we can try again.

I agree with you guys, We MUST keep Obama from the White House, and giving it to Clinton is right next door. We had enough hijinks with the first Clinton to be there, we dont need any more.
I cant say as a am a huge fan of McCain either, but he is the lessor of two evils. so he has my vote. Not to make a big deal of religion, but Obama sure has some characteristics of the Anti-Christ.

I will never again vote for the lesser of the two evils that are presented to the public as the only choices, R or D, both always have been previously approved by the worlds richest, elitist, pro global government group! I would not vote for Fred Thompson because I held him to account for voting to acquit Bill Clinton for the obvious felonies he committed while in office as I am sure I will all be held accountable to the master of the universe for voting for McCain or one of the socialist democrats who will be selected.
You say I am just throwing my vote away in some effort to try to convince me and others that we should vote for evil (the lesser), well if everyone throws their vote away the same way I am (for the best person qualified) then the best person qualified to be president, will be president. I am not going to vote for the lesser of two evils and more and more people are not going to do it either. Do you get it yet? Don't vote for evil! The lesser is still evil! Do you get it now? Besides, in determing the lesser of the evils, I agree with Ann Coulter, Hillary is to the right of McCain.

He did not even come close in getting the nomination…not even in the running as even Romney and Huckabee were always ahead of him. I think Rainbow gets it. A vote for Ron Paul is a vote for Hillary/Obama. It would be devastating for our country to have either of them as our President at this time.
As for McCain, I do not like him and would not vote for him if there were any other CLEAR winning choice. I will say, he does “reach across the aisle”, but will also say he doesn't do it because he leans to the Democrats, he does it because that is his view and he does not play to party lines. Hillary is a liar - she will say anything to get “the power”. Obama is scary. He is a smooth talker, but unAmerican and definitely inexperienced. To throw a vote away is dangerous this time around. The only “statement” you are going to make is that you are pissed off because the dog ate your homework…or as Rainbow clarified, you want Hillary/Obama as President. If that is the case, then just vote for him/her and make a real statement as he/she wins by a landslide.
Look back…Bush Sr lost because the Republican vote was divided by those who wanted to make a statement and voted Perot. Gore lost because the Democrat vote was divided by those who wanted to make a statement and voted Nader. I could hope that there will be an equal division of the parties and Nader will take away Democrat votes again to offset the votes Paul will take away from Republicans, but doubtful the Democrats will fall for that again.
Again, I have to ask…what does Ron Paul think of all this? He knows he can't win…does he really want us to “make a statement” and give the election to Hillary/Obama? He is an intelligent man, I can't believe he would want that. And if he does, he is not the man I thought he was.

I have to add…even IF every single Romney and Huckabee supporter voted for Ron Paul (ie: every Republican against McCain) or all supported either Romney or Huckabee, there is still NO way they could win. McCain clearly won the majority of the country's vote for the nomination. That is fact, not media hype. An “off party” vote is a vote for Hillary/Obama - there is just no way around it. The Republican party cannot afford to be divided. At least with McCain, you know what you are getting. He puts it right out there and doesn't give a crap if the media or anyone else likes it. With Hillary/Obama, their “crowd” dictates their views and their big speeches. Big big mistake to put either of them in office.

A third party candidate can not win. If you vote for one, you are voting for Billary/Obama. Listen to them. Is that what you want? I am hoping that McCain will pick an excellent VP. That is what will save us. If Ron Paul were the guy, then he would have won the primaries. As his poor showing has shown us, there is no way he can be elected. If he could win, he would have done better in the primaries. Don't throw your vote away unless you want Billary?Obama as your next President.

come on you guys McCain is not a republican he's a rino. the only hope i've got left is that he says he will appoint conservitive Judges thats what will make things change. the judges that will be retiring will be liberal if a liberal is in office we get more liberal judges if McCain is in office maybe just maybe we will get strict constitutionalist judges who won't erode our freedoms even more. Sorry tax slave but i'm going to hold my nose and be weeping and pull the lever.Everyone needs to remember that these are not just national elections. we need to push hard for conservitive state and national representation even more. reps are up every two years so at least one is. our senate seat is vacant as well we have to keep that but you hear nothing. maybe after the convintions we will here something. this border thing has got me creeped out with McCain though. Bush pushed a bunch of acts that took away some of our freedoms yet left the border open McCain will do worse he will forgive them for coming here illegally and then they will become demoncrates collecting wellfare and wanting more gov. aide. makes me want to throw up. I just can't believe how bad people have twisted our constitution around.

Just want to thank you all for posting on this topic. I learn a lot by reading the different points of view.
I also am leaning to McCain, not because I like him, but Obama and Hillary scare the heck out of me. Just would really like to have someone run that I could feel good about voting “for” instead of always having to vote against someone.
Please keep posting, but keep it clean, or the CDP will shut this down again.

wild, thats what they don't seem to understand, insperation will turn out the masses.IE Reagan I wasn't even old enough to vote but he inspired me to become a republican. right now its just a choice between a fast jet to socilism or a train. my biggest worry is that train will eventully lead to the same spot because weak kneed republicans don't inspire the party. They appease the other side to try to maintain power.

taxslave, I went and looked up McCains views on gun control. He does beleive in some gun control but not on assault weapons, he used to own guns but doesn't any more. I say never trust a president who doesn't own a gun.UNLESS his name is Clinton cause he might shoot you and call it a suicide
