The lot to the north of the house was traded with the city for another lot by the school admin building in early 1990(if I remember all this correctly). This allowed the admin building to close off the north end of the old alley way going thru the block and put in their parking lot. The public access alley then went from 7th Avenue to come out between the admin building and the house at 745 onto Yampa Avenue by making a 90 degree turn.

    Finally someone posts again…:))
I just think it is a disgrace to the family that waits to move into this home. With all the paper work, scuffling or whatever the people that are holding this up tell you, it all is sad because it makes others not even want to attempt to look into habitat homes. I'm sure the family that won the house is very frustrated by now. So typical for the progress in this valley.

This house will belong to Micheal and Sara Burkett. They have put alot of sweat equity into the house, he is doing most of the finish work, and she helped with the demolition and rebuilding. It is too bad that the house has taken so long, but there were unforseen problems along the way. Hopefully another HH house could be built using alot of the materials that were saved from this house, providing they can find a building site.
There were 4 families that initially applied for the house, but Burketts were the only ones to meet all the qualifications in the end. I am not sure of those.
HH retains some rights to the selling of the house for years to come, it would have to be approved by the board. My family contributed many hours to this house and hope that another one can be built soon. Anyone with more questions or suggestions can attend the HH board meeting. they are posted in the daily press

Question…..who pays for repairs of said homes after taking ownership? Can whoever afford plumbing, heating, exploded frozen plites, etc….bills?

It costs lots of money to own a home…..not just the mortgage payment.

People who can't afford homes rent apartments. I always did. I don't understand this approach.

btw, owning a home is not a “right”.

Oh on this note, the last HH residnets both drive brand new $30,000 vehicles. I worked and saved for almost 6 years to have a down payment on a place and I drove POS second hand cars so I could afford a house. How do people who qualify for a HH house also qualify for 50 plus thousand dollars in car loans? I am sure they are great and deserving people, I am just asking a question here.

You might also note that both of the vehicles were purchased out of town. Nice way to pay our community back for helping them into a home!

Well, I heard it actually belonged to her parents because they had no credit to speak of and couldn't get the loan on their own!
Why do you people care so much about this couple? They filled out the forms and did a bunch of work on the house and were picked to be the ones to live in it. I have no clue if someone else were more deserving or not, but the fact remains they were chosen for the house. And how they got newer cars and such is none of our business……..let it go!

No kidding…. Really, lets lay off this family. Have you driven down Yampa? Isn't it much nicer to look at the Burkett's home than Simmons Rooms and all the wonderful scrubs loitering outside?

I did notice. Maybe a better example would be the house between the Burkett's and Simmons Rooms? And after reading what everyone has to say about snow removal in town, don't the Burekett's get double extra credit for having their sidewalks cleared?

News this week showed snowpack in the Yampa River basin has reached 94 percent of median for the date. Do you think Moffat County is out of the woods as far as drought concerns?
